Akali Guhya Kali Temple

The magical place of Akalipur Guhya Kali Temple is about 300 years old. It is believed that this form of Goddess Kali was first worshipped by the people of Magadha. A few more generations later it was handed over to King Chait Singh of Benares. The myth behind how the deity came into the hands of this king began with a farmer discovering Kali in their land and hearing the news, Maharaja Chait Singh brought Maa Kali to his court and installed her there.

Nalateswari

Nalhati is an ancient town on the bank of the river Brahmani. The popularly known Parvati Pahar is located here and is considered to be the most sacred place to perform spiritual practices by the Tantra practitioners. It is the abode of the vermilion coated golden tongued Goddess Kali. The larynx of Sati is worshipped here as the Great Kali. The place is guarded by Yogish, the beloved consort of Sati.

Besides the Pancha Pitha, another significant place for spiritual practice is Tarapith. It is believed that obtaining a revelation, Sage Bashistha, had started practising penance on the bank of the river Dwaroka and visualised the divine sight of Jyotirmoyee Tara. The second form of Dasamahavidya, Brahmamoyee Tara, is seated since then at Tarapith. After Bashistha, Jay Dutta, the king of Ratnakar devoted his life to the Goddess Tara when the king found his dead son awaken after splashing water from the ‘Jivita Kunda'. He constructed the temple of Maa Tara first. Later on, the king Ramjiban Ray had constructed the temple too. The current edifice was established by Jagannatha Ray of Mallarpur in the Bengali year of 1225.

There were two young men involved in Bhakti movement during the medieval period. One was Gouranga of Nabadwip and another was Nityananda Mahaprabhu of this Rarh region. Nityananda Mahaprabhu was born on 12th Janury, 1473 at Birchandrapur. It is believed that in the initial episode of Mahabharata, Kunti, along with her Pandavas, used to stay here. It is one of the holy Vaishnab Dham and the Nityananda temple, popularly known as “Nitai Bari”, is the pilgrimage place of Vaishab devotees.

Lakshmibari in Ghoshgram is one of the most popular destinations for devotees of Maa Lakshmi. It is a very popular tourist spot during Lakshmi Puja and devotees from all over the country gather at Ghoshgram. The Lakshmi temple also has a very rich history and the Ghoshgram pujas and rituals are known throughout Birbhum and West Bengal.

In Birbhum, there is a very old Shiva temple called Kaleshwar. According to legend, a sage by the name of Parvat arrived here by performing penance for the goddess Parvati. Consequently, this village's name is Parvatipur. Shiv Linga was afterwards built in this Siddha Bhoomi by Kaleshnath Ghosh. Shiva is hence known by the devotee's name, Kaleshwar. King Ramjivan Roy of Dheka constructed this temple, which is among the highest in Birbhum. Later, the reconstruction of the temple is connected to the ascetic Dwarkanath Dev.

A Shakti goddess, Dwarbasini ("Dvaravasini") represents the goddess Durga. The Dwarbasini Temple is located at the conclusion of the Deucha-Baliharpur Road and on the banks of the Dwarka River. The river Dwarka runs through this area and, in accordance with Tantra, Dwarbasini is a Shaktipith.

The history of Jainism is mysteriously hidden in various parts of Birbhum. Some believe that the name of this land was derived from Mahabirbhumi to Birbhumi to Birbhum after the name of Mahavira. According to Jain belief, King Pardesi of Seyambia surrendered at the feet of Mahavira, the current name of Seyambia is Sainthia. Mahavira's footprints are on Yogi Hill in Ushka village near Deucha. So Yogi Pahar is known all over India today as a famous Jain pilgrimage. It is said that when Mahavira was bitten by a huge snake called Chanda Kaushik on this hill, he turned the poison into milk with his miraculous powers.
